Vertical storage tanks as they are known are the most common tanks used in rain water harvesting and are referred to as static (motionless water) inside of the tank.
(see installation options for more information).
Having said that, up to 80% of tank installations are of the following sizes:
1000lt slim tank H D
2200lt Low profile H D
2500lt H D
5000lt H D
10 000lt H D
* 15kl to 3 million litre options and pricing available on request.
Tanks have tie downs as well as a black anti-algae lining which prevents algae growing in the tank due to the lack of UV exposure.
Although not warrantied for excessively high temperatures we have had success between 60 and 80 degrees if precautions are taken and some secrets of the trade are followed :-)
Rainwater is collected off the roof or any other suitable surface area and into the tank. Depending on the use of this water first flush units may be required to assist in keeping the water clean going into the tank and preventing possible problems especially if pumps etc will be used from the tank into the house to prevent sediment build up in the piping / geyser etc.
NB Don’t forget to ask us about our overflow pipe… tanks can fill up very quickly so it pays to be prepared for this to prevent water accumulating around the tank.
A common question is how much rain water can I get off my roof. Ok so let’s work with a small home of 100 square meters. 1mm of rain over 100m2 will give you 100lt, 10mm a 1000lt and 100mm or rain an amazing 10 000lt, now just imagine a 200 or 300m2 house…the amazing volume you could harvest!
This is where the main line is disconnected and runs into the tank on a ball valve system exactly the same as when a toilet is flushed and the ball-valve drops and allows the tank to be refilled. In the case of a water cut the tank then acts as a reservoir so you will not even realize that a water problem has occurred. The tank is connected to a pump and sent back towards the house. Water standing should be safe for approximately 3 to 6 months but it is advisable to keep rotating the water I.e 6lt to flush your toilet and 6lt of fresh clean water enters your tank
This is possibly the best system as it provides both a guaranteed water storage as well as the added option of harvesting rain water. The municipal line will keep the water in the tank at a required level via a ball valve at a required level and if any rain occurs it will “top-up” The tank.
